Panchito’s Mexican Food

5/5
Taco ‘bout delicious

Contrary to popular belief (among Mexicans), Mexican food is actually quite vegan friendly. Beans, corn, tortillas and the unique taste profile that comes from the (usually) plant-based sauces that make the food shine are the true stars of the cuisine. However, getting some authentic Mexican food, even if it’s street food, is quite a difficult feat in Sweden. You know, Swedes have their own “Tacos”, which is basically just a make your own burrito/wrap kinda thing.

In any case, happy to see that Panchitos opened his own place after being on the streets with his little food truck.

With a location at Nordostpassagen Panchitos is really more of a neighbourhood restaurant, like your pizza place in every larger apartment group. But it is closer to Linnégatan and the “Långgaterna” than it first appears, so plenty of dedicated pass by visitors should make it happen.

The inside will charm you with a simple, but cosy, Latin feeling. It used to be a Colombian café and there are still Colombians working here, so while the focus is on Mexico, it is more of a celebration of Latin America with the vibe. As someone who adores the region, I feel right at home.

The menu is your expected standards. Tacos, Chilaquiles, Burritos (though this is more Tex Mex). And everything can be vegan. And all of that at a price of of 119 SEK each. It feels like you’re robbing the poor people here. Especially considering that everything is really made from scratch with passion. No Santa Maria Tortillas, nope. The tortillas are handmade with proper corn flour. And this goes further to the nacho chips, the sauces and, obviously, the fillings.

It’s ridiculous if you think about it how much passion goes into it for such a low price point. But what about the food?

Well, if you have eaten from Panchitos food truck before, you will know that these tacos particularly are the real deal. The vegan filling is always a little bit different and usually a blend of plant protein (sometimes the locally produced hababmeat) and vegetables. It’s not very spicy, but there are sauces to adjust to your desired level. And all that with sides of nacho chips and guacamole.

Even the burrito is quite nice, though not necessarily my favourite. I’d stick to the tacos or the chilaquiles to get something different. But the point stands, Panchitos is a hidden gem. Simple, authentic Mexican cuisine, entirely made from scratch, at a very low price point. And everything can be vegan. These are the true stars in my book and even if it is rather simple and not the place to impress your in-laws, it is comfort food to a high grade. Absolute worth visiting.

Price:

Nachos: 79 SEK

Tacos: 119 SEK

Burritos: 119 SEK

Chilaquiles: 119 SEK

Bowls: 119 SEK

The Verdict

Panchitos is a true hidden gem. With a location that is more linked to your average neighbourhood pizzeria, it is still close enough to the main streets to go outside of your routines. You will not regret it, as here you can find true, authentic, Mexican food. No Santa Maria tortillas, no ready-made sauces. All made from scratch with proper ingredients and passion. And the best thing? Everything can be vegan! All of that at a really cheap price point that feels like stealing. So, don’t wait it out and get some proper tacos at Panchitos.
