Doy Doy

4/5
If you want a man to work well, feed him first.
— Turkish proverb

Turks love to claim that their cuisine is not vegan friendly - while stuffing themselves with all sorts of traditionally vegan meze next to the meat. So, it is not an obvious choice to go to a place like Doy Doy, that is famous for the grilled meat, but as someone who knows that Turks have a knack for good meze, let’s see what else they have!

With it’s location on Backaplan, Doy Doy is not at the most charming location - and that’s something I say as someone who lives on Hisingen and absolute loves this island. But, Backaplan is in dire need of redevelopment. In any case, at the edge of the big parking lot behind Coop, Doy Doy is welcoming you with the smell of fresh food!

The charming interior does make up for the outside though, and the welcoming staff is always appreciated. It is a fairly big place and many seats are available, but it still feels cosy. The menu has - obviously - not many vegan options for you, but they have different meze, Fattoush, and grilled vegetables. So still plenty to get you going.

The staff was nice enough to make sure to clarify ingredients and the bread is vegan (unlike some other similar places), but the baba ganoush is not vegan (unlike other places), as they add yoghurt to that one. Good to keep in mind, but most of the meze is still fully plant based.

And the prices are really something. Fattoush as 84 SEK, grilled vegetable plate with rice at 149 SEK and a Meze plate at 69 SEK/plate. It’s all very cheap for the mountains of food you gonna have. In addition to that, there is all you can drink tea, as it should be in a place like this.

The food itself? Pretty good in all honesty. They use proper raw ingredients, the quality is high and it’s very filling. Even the grilled vegetables are really nice and filling with aubergine, potatoes and mushrooms. Together with the meze you can have quite the nice and filling feast.

And that wraps it up! Not too much to say, but Doy Doy is a surprisingly good place for vegans. Good quality ingredients, cheap prices and still a decent feast all things considered. I’d come back!

Price:

Meze: 69 SEK

Fattoush: 84 SEK

Grilled Vegetable plate: 149 SEK

The Verdict

While it might be unintuitive, Doy Doy is surprisingly vegan friendly if you focus on the Meze, Fattoush and grilled vegetables. With prices ranging from 69-149 SEK, it’s also very wallet-friendly on top of that. While the location of Doy Doy is a bit off, the interior makes up for it, as well as the friendly staff. The bread they serve is vegan (unlike other similar places), but the Baba Ganoush has added yoghurt, so be careful here. Also, if you’re sensitive, the smell of meat can throw you off as well, but all things considered, it’s a really nice place for some meze at a high quality and low cost.
