Naansense

4/5
I’m having a naan-stop craving for Indian food!

By now you might have realised that there are not many reviews of Indian restaurants here even though it’s an extremely Vegan-friendly cuisine. Well, I used to live with Indians and learned some of their best tricks and in all honesty, most Indian restaurants never make me feel great afterwards, so I stopped going. Naansense is a bit of a different case. First of all, the name is fantastic, but also it is focused on Vegetarian/vegan aspects of the Indian cuisine, so that is a green flag. How is it?

With a location at Övre Husargatan, it is rather central around Linné, but not necessarily super on the way. Still, plenty of restaurants in the area, so not hard to miss.

It’s a rather small place with only a few chairs and a simple interior. Also, the kitchen is tiny and it seems to be a one-person show, but I don’t mind that. I am just wondering how difficult it can be with more than just two people (us) in the place.

The menu is quite clear about vegetarian and vegan and what can be made vegan. Big green flag again. But what comes to mind is just how extensive the menu is. Plenty of different Naan and Paratha, small dishes, mains and so on. Prices range from 35 SEK for naan, over 65 SEK for Samosas to around 150 SEK for a main with rice. All in all pretty affordable.

We decided to have a feast and get tasting. So Samosas, Pani Puri, Naan, Paratha and two mains. Just hit us. And expectedly, it took quite a while for it to gradually come. One of the reasons for that is pretty obvious fast, most things seem to be made in house. This is impressive.

The quality of it all is a bit mixed in my opinion though. The Samosas didn’t work for me. Too deep fried, I am not too big on the selection of spices in here. The Pani Puri didn’t work for me either. The Aloo Paratha (with potatoes) was pretty neat though, same goes for the Naan, though this one is more of a crisp bread than a yeast-leavened Naan.

The mains on the other hand are very filling and full of taste. Beautiful curries strong with flavours such as roasted onion or spinach.

Especially here you can see the quality of it all and that someone cooks with passion. Really good stuff. All in all I am just a bit confused about the size of the menu, as execution is a bit mixed. I think a focus on Naan and mains would do better, as these are clearly the standout dishes, while all the smaller things are nice to have, but I wasn’t particularly impressed. Nevertheless, I’d come back. It’s good Indian food made with passion.

Price:

Small Dish: 65 SEK

Naan: 29-35 SEK

Paratha: 29-59 SEK

Main: 140 - 155 SEK

The Verdict

Naansense is a small place with big ambitions. The menu is enormous for a place this size, and the downsides show up fast with long waiting times and mixed quality of some dishes. But, the clear indication of the menu items is a green flag for vegans and the mains are just full of flavour and really good curries. On top of that, the Naan is really nice, even though it’s more of a crispy one and not a yeast-leavened one. With an affordable price point and good food, Naansense is really a nice place to have on your list. Just stick to the mains and Naan (and Paratha) and expect to wait a bit longer if it gets busier. I’d come again!
