Chinese Sharing
— Dubbel Dubbel

Dubbel Dubbel is a chain restaurant active in Gothenburg, Malmö, Lund and Stockholm, with 3 restaurants just in Gothenburg. They make Chinese inspired small dishes to share and have indicated vegan options. Good enough to give it a try!

When entering the locale at Surbrunnsgatan, around 17:40 on a Tuesday afternoon, the first issue didn’t wait for long. The restaurant has an order at the bar vibe, but they still expect you to sit down and take the orders seated. Alright, a bit unclear, but we are happy to cooperate.

After sitting down, it took around 5 minutes until the waiter brought the menu, and another 10 minutes to take our orders. We took the whole vegan menu. Interesting occurrence: my wife is mushroom intolerant, so we usually order any food without mushrooms, but this seemed to be a challenge for the waiter, as they didn’t seem to be able to substitute the mushroom salad with something else vegan and not mushroom filled. Side note: they were severely understaffed. 2 waiting personnel and 1 person in the kitchen. Way too few for a place this size and not their fault for being slow and overwhelmed.

In any case, drinks came fast and they had alcohol free Tsingtao, and that’s kinda cool. But then the waiting continued, and continued. Around one hour after we first entered, the first precourse arrived. Two sad bao buns filled with Tempeh and mayonnaise and hoisin sauce. Interesting combination, but in the end rather tasteless. The tempeh was alright, but it was all not good. However, we were craving for more. After another 10 minutes, the rest of the food arrived.

An assortment of different dishes awaited us, dumplings with cabbage, deep fried wontons, Pak choi, cucumber salad, tempeh in szechuan sauce, carrot salad, rice, and…mushroom salad?

Now hold on a moment, why is there mushroom salad? In any case, we were hungry, and since I eat mushrooms, we decided to just go with it. Still, it’s a hard no-go in the restaurant industry to bring food with allergens after being informed by the guests. But in the end, the waiting time was ill-invested. Whatever we tried, none of it had any taste really. Colourful, yes, but bland. Like salt is missing, as well as some heat and proper seasoning when cooking. The dumplings were encased in a way too thick dough, and the mushroom salad tasted like chili oil only.

We were hungry, so we ate it all, but it left us displeased and empty. To fill the void in our stomaches we ended up going to Max later to have a Lyxshake.

The Verdict

The overall experience was very bad. But even taking away the overworked staff and waiting times, the quality of the food is really bad for the price point, as well as portion sizes too small. I mean, if your food is bad, at least give me enough of it to feel not hungry anymore. Since it’s a chain, I believe the food will be the same everywhere at all times, as the kitchen personnel will likely only follow instructions.

Avoid. Not worth the investment, time or money.
