Buono Pizza

5/5
See Naples and die.
— Italian proverb

Pizza is a big thing. Especially in Sweden. If you are not aware of it, Sweden has it’s own Pizza culture that pinnacles in the Kebab Pizza, where you have an average Margherita base, topped with kebab, kebab sauce, ‘pizza salad’ and, if you are truly into it, some fries. This has not much to do with Pizza in general, and over time more places popped up around Gothenburg that focus on Naples style pizza. Simple, authentic and focusing on good dough and sauce. Buono is one of the newest additions to it in the city and started in Summer 2019 at Teatergatan 15, right at Avenyn.

Who doesn’t like pizza? I am obviously the same and pre-vegan I loved my simple Margherita, but also a good Marinara. Having been to Naples myself and thoroughly enjoyed it, I learned to love the authentic Naples style of preparing pizza. Needless to say, when an Italian friend told me I should check out Buono, I was intrigued.

Fair disclaimer, I am already a regular at Buono, but let me give you the story of my first visit.

Greeted by friendly and smiling faces, we were seated inside the cute litte place. 4 tables, a few more near the bar. Nothing major, but it’s plastered with pictures of Naples and an Italian decor. The music playing is also coming straight from an Italian radio station - or Spotify. What do I know the difference?

Looking at the menu however, a first shock hits my hungry heart: there is no vegan alternative on the menu, nope, not even a Marinara. So, once asked if they could maybe make a Marinara for us, we were greeted instead with a surprise: there is a vegan pizza they offer outside of the menu, the pizza vegana!

It’s basically a Marinara with extra steps, such as added garlic, olives, sun dried tomatoes and mushrooms, though we we like to take away the latter. Sounds pretty amazing. Once ordered together with a Moretti Zero, the waiting game began.

And when the Pizza Vegana finally arrived (after like 10 minutes tops), I wanted to cry. It was beautiful. The dough was crispy and juicy at the same time, the marinara perfectly spiced and the ingredients on top of the highest quality. I mean, I don’t even like olives all that much, but the ones they use here on the pizza, they are something else.

And a little tip from my side: sprinkle some of the olive oil that is situated at each table onto the pizza. It’s a high quality olive oil from Il Molino in Italy and makes it even better. It brought me right back to Naples.

The price for the whole fun trip to Naples? A cheap 149 SEK for the pizza. That even beats Ryanair these days, so kudos to Buono!

Alcohol free beer: 49 SEK

The Verdict

If you are afraid of going Naples and die, as nothing beats it’s beauty, Buono might just be the closes thing to it. The people, the pizza and overall atmosphere will make you feel right at home. This place is passion, and you can feel it in every ounce.

Simply the best pizza in Gothenburg.
