Jinx Dynasty

5/5
Bastardized Asian Street Food
— Jinx Dynasty

So, here we are. One of Gothenburgs most known places for Bao Buns and vegan options with two locations, one food truck at Magasinsgatan 17, and one restaurant at Vallgatan 21, not far from the first spot.

It started off as a food truck, or according to their Facebook page a “snack van”, which just sounds too lovely not to mention it here.

To start off, the locale is situated in the beautiful courtyard Victoriagården, right in the city centre. It feels like an oasis in the buzzing city. The only downside of the location is the restaurant accross, Brisket & Friends, that ever so often infuses the surrounding areas with the smell of burnt pork ribs. Not the most appetising if you are sensitive, but personally I don’t mind it too much.

Jinx Dynasty itself is a tiny little place, reminiscing a little bit of a Izakaya Bar in Tokyo. So, there is basically no comfortable seating inside, but the atmosphere is top notch. The outside area has more of a seating space and is definitely preferred if you have issues with claustrophobia.

The food is ordered at the bar area, that also works as an inside view into the kitchen - in case you have trust issues, I guess. The menu is simple and offers the signature Bao Buns, as well as some sides such as loaded fries or corn. Simple, but pleasing and destinctive. Sometimes there are also some specials, but those are usually not vegan, so we don’t bother with that here.

Drinks are your typical ones, but kudos for the alcohol free they offered last time, Implosion from the Danish brewert To Øl. Fantastic little beverage.

Personally, I went for the Vegan Bao Buns, two pieces. Served in a little cardboard tray, they look deliciously arranged. Inside the buns we find panko fried tofu, with some pickled cucumber and cabbage, gochujangmayonnaise, kimchisalsa, hoisin and topped with peanuts and koriander. Crunchy, juicy, blissful. Be ready to get your hands dirty though.

After you eat, you clean out your paper dish and leave the space looking as untouched as the Swedish nature (in some parts). Or at least you try not to look like the biggest fool cleaning up your spillage with a paper thin tissue.

In any case, you will definitely not regret coming here. The people are great and have good humour, the place has an alternative vibe and the music playing will definitely suit you. Big big recommendation, especially considering the cheap price point.

Price:

2 Vegan Bao Buns: 115 SEK

1 Alcohol free beer: 50 SEK

The Verdict

The crispy deep fried tofu will give you goosebumps from excitement and you will find yourself going back here just for one more crunch. Just. One. More. Crunch.
