Wok Eriksberg

Despair leads to interesting results
— Pascal Kuta

I already talked about it many times. The problem on Hisingen is that good restaurants, especially Asian, are very hard to come by. In a situation of desperation on a Sunday evening - a particularly bad time for food in Sweden - we ended up at Wok Eriksberg. I am all up for trying new places, so let’s see.

Wok Eriksberg is found right in a residential area and doesn’t look like a restaurant at first sight. But the one lonely table outside and stopper sign gives it away. There is indeed a place to eat here.

After entering, you are basically in the kitchen, with some high tables and high chairs cramped against the wall. It’s clean, it’s alright, just steamy and the massive plastic foil type layer between ordering counter and kitchen gives March 2020 vibes. I guess it’s done to keep the kitchen spraying away from the customer seating.

The menu prominently displays vegan options straight away, so no need to order a dish with chicken and ask them to replace it with tofu and omit fish sauces and the likes. So, that’s a good sign!

We went for the curry stir fry and the tofu stir fry and sat down at the seating inside. This was more difficult than it should have been, as the chairs are not adjusted to the height of the table, or vice versa. So an uncomfortable experience from the get go.

Shortly after that, food arrived and the portions were ridiculous. At a price point of only 105-125 SEK, you get literally 3 portions - per person. But how does it taste like?

Well, here it starts. It’s possibly one of the worst “Asian” foods I have ever eaten. The curry stir fry is really that, a stir fry with Santa Maria curry powder. It tastes like something you should definitely not put into your mouth.

The tofu stir fry, however, takes the cake. The sauce is a weird garlic base, but lacks any soy or other umami components and is super sticky/gluey from the starch. It looks like it has been digested before, and it tastes like that as well. Absolutely horrible. So, thank you for the large portion, but nope, I can’t eat that.

The food is simply disgusting. Avoid this place at all cost.

The Verdict

It’s a take-away place first and foremost. The locale is not suited to have seated guests at all, as the tables and chairs are uncomfortable and you sit right at the kitchen anyways. The portion sizes are ridiculously huge, way too much to eat as one serving. This could be seen as an advantage, but considering the food is absolutely horrendous, I’d rather pass. The vegan dishes had wild combination of sauces, such as a supermarket curry spice sauce or a weird slimy garlic sauce for the tofu dish. Nope. Just nope.

It’s sad, cause the staff is very attentive to allergenes and ingredients and they clearly use fresh vegetables in their cooking. Just a bummer, that they can’t cook at all. Avoid this place.
