Thaimums

Mums means ‘yum’ in English!

Thaimums is situated right at the entrance to Utlandagatan, very comfortably next to large student housing by SGS. They offer thai food, so they say, for a cheap price.

If you have seen some of my previous reviews, you might have seen by now that I just love the cuisine of the Asian continent, especially south-east Asia. Probably since I used to live there, but I tend to be extra critical about it in Europe, as all I am asking for is something that is authentic in the end. Let’s see how Thaimums holds up. Spoiler: not great.

Thaimums has a menu of a variety of dishes, sorted by type, e.g. stir fry, curry, noodles. All dishes are shown as a base and you choose your protein which defines the price. For vegans there is the option of no protein (vegetables only) or tofu for 95 SEK respectively 99 SEK. Pretty darn cheap. There is even a lunch offer from 11:00 -14:30 where a drink is included.

If you know your way around Thai cuisine a little bit, you will have an idea how the dishes should look like and taste like. If you ask to have the dishes made vegan, so without any fish sauce or oyster sauce, they an accommodate you. They can even make Tom Yam in vegan, despite not being on the menu at all, so kudos for this!

However, the instructions sometimes don’t go fully through to the kitchen and it’s not unlikely that your food still has ingredients in you wanted to avoid (allergies!) or the sauce still tastes a bit fishy. In any case, I decided for a Pad King, but have eaten other dishes as well previously at Thaimums. They serve their stir fry with heart shaped rice, topped with a heart shaped carrot. Cheesy, but kinda cute.

The dishes themselves however only barely resemble what they should.

The Pad Krapow for example is at Thaimums a chili stir-fry with vegetables. No thai basil to be found. The Pad King is filled with sweet corn from the can, the Tom Yam is missing most of it’s ingredients such as galangal, lime leaves and so forth. Even more so, if you take the vegan options, the sauce is so faint and has almost no punch, as if the kitchen staff doesn’t know how to cook, but only knows how to cook exactly how it was shown them and substitutes are not a thing (dark soy for a richer taste if you don’t use oyster sauce for example). The tofu they use is quite alright though, squishy, but could use some more heat and love.

Overall you will not have the greatest time here, but at least it’s cheap. I guess.

Price:

Vegetables: 95 SEK/dish

Vegetables and tofu: 99 SEK/dish

The Verdict

If you are in need of something that faintly resembles the food from Thailand for a cheap price, this is probably a decent enough place. And hey, I keep on coming back when I am hungry, too lazy too cook and don’t want to spend too much. It does the job alright, but so does a sandwich from 7-Eleven.

So, gets you full for a cheap price, but don’t expect any Thai food here.
