Thai Dee

Sawasdee Thai Dee!

Lately I have been hesitant to leave the Island life of Hisingen just to get some food, so it was about exploring the options nearby. Thai food is always popular and since Taste of Thai Kök closed (I reviewed it before), a new simple place needed to be found. Thai Dee at Kvilletorget seems like a good call, so let’s go!

Kvilletorget starts to become somewhat of a vibrant hub right on Hisingen. It was always quite a cool place with a variety of options to eat and drink and even play Pool/Shuffleboard, but it seems to grow. Thai Dee has been around since March 2022, so it’s a rather fresh soul.

The inside looks like your typical Thai restaurant in Sweden. Simple, but charming. The menu is written by hand on a large blackboard in chalk over by the entrance. For easier communication, all dishes are numbered. We know that the average Swede will struggle with Thai names for dishes, other than Pad Thai of course.

So, we went for Red and Phanaeng curry as well as some mini spring rolls and two drinks. The price? 285 SEK for the entire party. This is cheap! Announcing vegan was clearly understood immediately and one could be sure no fish sauce will find its way into the curry. Shortly after ordering, the kitchen started to work their magic loudly while we sat down in the decent enough interior. It’s simple, but alright.

Food was ready fast and looked decent enough, though the presentation will look more like your home cooked meal. But: many good and fresh vegetables are in the curry, usually something where Thai restaurants cheap out by just having more onions and bamboo instead. Also, the portion of rice is good! Finally a place with decent amounts!

The spring rolls on the other hand are, as expected, just your wholesale ones, but I don’t mind that to be honest. At least I know the list of ingredients by heart.

And that’s more or less it. Not too much to say, but I did enjoy the food. The curry was rich, though nothing to go completely crazy for, the portion size good and the price phenomenal for what you get. I will definitely come back for a quick curry, but it’s just not the place to really “go out” to. I do recommend it though and it’s clearly one of the better Thai restaurants I have seen in Gothenburg!

Price:

Red Curry with Tofu: 95 SEK

Mini Spring Rolls, 8x: 45 SEK

The Verdict

Thai Dee is your typical Thai restaurant in Sweden. Nothing will surprise you in here, but that’s a good thing sometimes. Your typical selection of dishes is on the menu, the staff is clearly understanding vegan as a request and it goes fast to receive your order. The interior is simple, but works. The food itself is quite good with rich curry bases, fresh (and good) vegetables, decent enough tofu and plentiful rice (finally!). All that to a really cheap price, I mean you can have a feast for two people with drinks for less than 300 SEK. Some things, like the Spring Rolls are the ones from Saigon Wholesale, but that’s to be expected and I don’t mind to be honest. Fry them up for 45 SEK (8 pieces).

A surprisingly good Thai restaurant right at Kvilletorget. Will definitely be visited more often for the Red Curry desires.
