Taste of Thai Kök

3/5
Just like in Thailand?

Update March 2024:

Taste of Thai Kök does no longer exist.

-

Getting some non-horrible Asian food becomes quite the challenge once on Hisingen. Options get scarce, and many of them are already shady before even seeing the inside. Taste of Thai Kök around Lundby is high rated and seems like a decent option. But does it hold up to the Google Reviews?

Taste of Thai Kök is right next to the Rambergsrinken and Bravida Arena, on the small street. With all the new apartments that have been and are being built in the area, there is definitely no shortage of potential customers.

The outside of the locale looks quite shady, the inside is not that much better, but it’s clean and the person behind the counter has a big smile and greets happily. As someone who lived in Asia, I know that looks can be deceiving and the flashy looking places often serve the worst food.

The menu is your typical Thai place in Sweden-situation. A bunch of dishes, sorted by curry, stew, stir fry and the protein of choice changes the price point (100 SEK for only vegetables, 105 SEK for tofu). Very cheap!

We went for the red curry and a Pad Krapow, as well as spring rolls. After explaining it to be vegan, they understood it directly and took necessary measures. Great!

Only a short moment later, the food arrived. The red curry looked like one, the spring rolls are clearly frozen from a wholesale and the Pad Krapow has nothing to do with the dish - the usual. All plated on IKEAs cheapest.

But, the taste is quite alright. The portion is quite large for the price point and it is overall fairly decent. Honestly, it’s a nice surprise to receive food that at least tastes well and is made with care. The ingredients are at this price point not all freshly bought and prepared, but rather canned or frozen, but hey, it’s 105 SEK for this. I can’t say I’m mad.

So, food is quite alright, the vibe and style is quite, so so. In the end, Taste if Thai Kök is takeout. And eating is is getting takeout plated like it’s a Sunday, you study and are hungover as hell. The cheap IKEA plates only give in to this charme. For the price point absolutely no reason to complain. It’s decent enough and I will come back. But its nothing that I would openly recommend as a place for a date night for example.

Price:

Main Dish with tofu: 105 SEK

Drink: 25 SEK

The Verdict

When you crave some Thai-like cuisine, Taste of Thai Kök will deliver it to a very fair price. While the food is not really authentic and your typical “Swedified” way of interpreting Thai cuisine, at least the red, green or yellow curry are close enough. The stir-fries are your usual BS bingo you find in Sweden and don’t resemble the actual dishes. But that’s okay at this price point. Recommended for your casual take-away evening every now and then, but don’t expect much more than that! I’d come again for some comfort food.
