Restaurang Com

2/5
Viet nom nom nom!

You know it, I love Vietnamese food. It’s my favourite cuisine, so I am somewhat on a mission to map out all the Vietnamese restaurants in Gothenburg - I guess? In any case, Restaurang Com is another one that has good reviews and good looking food according to the pictures. Let’s give it a shot!

There are many Vietnamese restaurants in Gothenburg. Linné is an area I haven’t been yet for this purpose, but Restaurang Com (with the signature Vietnamese “o”), looks quite inviting. The atmosphere is good, the menu looks good and the food looks good. What can go wrong?

First up, the staff is great. Knows about food and allergies and tries to make it a good experience for you. This is how you would like it. The menu offers your typical variety of dishes, ranging from Spring and Summer rolls, to Pho and stir fries, and has some Bao Buns as well, cause why not? Everyone has Bao Buns nowadays since Jinx made them a popular food in Gothenburg.

We went for the typical variety of food as well, cause why not? But this time no Pho. So, Summer Rolls, Spring Rolls (with mushrooms in the filling), Bao Buns and a stir fry with tofu. According to the staff potentially spicy.

The food came plated very beautifully with all things nicely arranged. The stir fry even came in a plate that resembled the belly of a cow? Weird choice, but sure. But when you start biting something weird happens. There is no taste? Alright, try again with different food. Still, the same.

The food is just really really bland. It’s lacking herbs such as coriander and mint, it’s lacking some soy sauce, it’s lacking basically everything. It still kinda feels like you eat something Asian, but it’s just really really bland.

The stir fry stands out hereby, as it just tastes like a bad sweet & sour take-away from a Chinese restaurant. Nothing I’d expect in a Vietnamese restaurant. And spicy? Nope. Not at all.

And that leaves me with a weird sensation. What did I just eat? Could have been a mush as well, I guess. And at a price point of roundabout 250 SEK/person, this is just not what I hope for. It’s sad really, cause the technique and all looks competent. It’s just that the kitchen seems to be to frightened of the Swedish customers’ taste and doesn’t dare to really go full Vietnamese on them. Nope, not coming again.

Price:

Summer Rolls: 79 SEK

Spring Rolls: 74 SEK

Bao Buns (1 piece): 69 SEK

Pho: 149 SEK

Stir fry: 139 SEK

The Verdict

The looks are deceiving. The restaurant looks nice, the food looks nice, but then you try and just wonder where the taste is. All of the vegan dishes were tasteless and just missing that signature Vietnamese combination of herbs. No coriander, no mint, but instead some roasted onions in the peanut sauce. It doesn’t help that the stir fry tasted like a cheap version of a store-bought sweet sour sauce. Not what I expect in a Vietnamese restaurant. The staff is nice and knowledgeable, but the food just isn’t worth coming. Avoid.
