Sushi Eki

Roll me up like your vegan roll?

In recent months, sushi places with dedicated vegan options have become a much more common sight around Gothenburg. On a hunt for vegan rolls, our journey takes us to Tuve this time. Sushi Eki is pretty new and was established around May 2021 as part of the new residential development around Tuve torg.

Right in the bottom of a residential building, Sushi Eki is almost invisible when just driving past. Inside, a cosy atmosphere awaits you, though the counter at the entrance is often hidden behind take-away boxes. Despite not offering delivery via Foodora, many locals seem to prefer to pick up their orders directly.

I like to sit in though, so that’s what’s happening here. On the menu, the usual classics. Poké Bowl, Maki and rolls and some warm dishes, though none of them vegan. We went for the vegan rolls at a price point of 135 SEK and some Edamame for 39 SEK. Pretty fair pricing!

One serving of Miso soup is included in the sushi, but contains fish sauce for no clear reason, so that’s an instant no unfortunately.

Depending on the time of day, it can get quite busy, and since many people order and pick up, waiting times can be quite long even in a rather empty locale, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Edamame are served with some sea salt and without a bowl to put the shells in, so you are best advised to snitch a miso soup bowl for that if you don’t want to discard them on the table. When the vegan rolls arrive it’s a feast for the eyes though. Carefully aligned, decorated and presented in a beautiful way. Topped with some random greenery, black and red sesame seeds and some sides like wakame, soybeans and ginger. It’s an impressive sight, not gonna lie.

The contents don’t disappoint either. Filled with tofu skin, cucumber, lettuce and topped with avocado. It’s a great composition and very pleasing to indulge in. I’d say, it’s among the best vegan rolls I have seen in Gothenburg. So, kudos for that! Especially at a price point like this. The only downsides are the lack of other options and the non-vegetarian/vegan miso soup. So, for sushi, it’s a great place!

Price:

Vegan Rolls: 135 SEK

Edamame: 39 SEK

The Verdict

Sushi Eki is a fantastic place for vegan rolls. They are entailing the essence of what makes sushi so great, even without the need for fish. Great presentation, great quality of ingredients, and all of that to a very fair price. The only downsides are the lack of any other options and the non-vegan miso soup. So, I’m a bit torn, but can still full-heartedly recommend to eat here for your vegan sushi desires!
