Ostindiska Ölkompaniet

3/5
Just your typical Swedish pub.

I’m not the biggest Pub goer, at least not since I stopped drinking many years ago. I still like my alcohol free beers and the vibe though, but you won’t see me hanging out every weekend at a nearby pub. And since I moved away from Kålltorp, the area around Olskroken is not often visited either anymore. Sometimes you just need to increase your radius, so this time we went to Ostindiska Ölkompaniet, which has a funky name, but is really just a pub.

Closely located at Redbergsplatsen, it’s quite easy to reach and find a means of transportation if you had too many of those beers. The building is charming and there are tons and tons of seats outside and inside. It’s a big place with your typical cute Swedish pub decor.

They have obviously plenty of beers, also alcohol-free, but we are here for the food. The menu has a clearly defined vegan burger, that’s a big plus for trust, and….that’s it. Nothing else is vegan, so I hope you like burgers.

After ordering it didn’t take long to receive the food, despite it being rather crowded, so they seem to have their shit together.

And the burger came quite to a surprise. It’s a Beyond Meat patty, and the big one even, not the small one. There is vegan cheese and a bazillion fries next to it. For the price of just 119 SEK this is quite extraordinary. It’s basically what you pay at MAX nowadays.

And the burger itself? Is actually quite good. In all honesty, it’s remarkably difficult to get a good vegan burger in Sweden. most restaurants just don’t bother and give you something half shady. Finding a decent burger with a good patty (it’s Beyond Meat, we use it ourselves since it’s good), a decent bun (!) and not too much stuff going on is refreshing.

However, the kitchen was a bit too fast on one of the burgers, as it was still kinda uncooked in the middle. I guess that’s coming from cooking mainly meat burgers, where this is wished for. With Beyond Meat, please cook it through though.

And that’s it already. Decent burger, low price, but nothing more. I just hope they cook it properly next time, but I will remember it and coming back at some point.

Vegan Burger: 119 SEK

The Verdict

Well, I have to say, I didn’t expect to get such a good vegan burger at a place like this. At a price point of only 119 SEK, it’s barely covering the raw ingredient cost of the thick Beyon Patty and the loads of fries. But the burger is actually quite good, better than most places I have been to, and oh boy, have I eaten a lot of vegan burgers. Most of them shady, but as a vegan you have to live with it sometimes. In any case, there is not much more to choose from, but at least you get something decent to eat while drinking a beer. Important though that the staff cooks through Beyond patties as well. One of ours was a bit uncooked from the inside, and even if it’s vegan, cook it through please.

Apart from that. Charming neighbourhood pub that has a burger for you.
