Moreno Pizza

3/5
The largest pizzeria in the world!

Moreno Pizza has been hyped up quite a bit before launch. It was Göteborgsfamiljens (a group of people who own a lot of bars/restaurants in Gothenburg) new thing. The biggest pizzeria in the world, they say. And I am sure there are some metrics that make it right, but is that really a metric for quality?

Located at Stigbergstorget, right across the square and next to the more hipster places such as Bengans and Oceanen, Moreno Pizza towers over them all. It’s a big building, but in all honesty quite charming in the landscape. Though I am sure the residents don’t think so, considering Moreno Pizza has long opening hours, very cheap beer, and a rooftop bar that basically looks into people’s living rooms.

In any case, it has quite the 60s charm in the architecture and styling with a touch of Italian-American vibes from the 1930s. I like it!

You get seated where there is space, unless you booked for a larger crowd. The staff is clearly divided into different roles and has a specific approach. The first waiter only wanted to take drinks orders and did not allow for food orders, while also being a bit unclear/condescending upon questions. The second one took the food order then a bit later. It’s all a bit odd, but that’s how Swedish service is done. Hospitality is really not a virtue of Swedes, neither is training of staff. But that’s alright.

The menu has a vegan pizza prominently places. Basically a marinara with olives, sundried tomatoes, artichokes, almonds and rucola. Sounds good to me!

And despite the place being rather full on a Friday evening, the pizza came quite fast. It seems to help to be the biggest pizzeria in the world. They seem to have the logistics to push out orders fast, and I appreciate that!

The pizza itself is a Swedish style pizza. So the dough is pretty standard and has not the vibe a Naples style one gives you. It’s crispy and it works, but it always feels like having ‘nattamat’ somewhere in the countryside. The toppings and marinara are quite nice though. I did enjoy it for what it is, but I can’t help but notice the toppings are a bit of a mess. I guess stress made the kitchen throw it on there in a rush.

And that’s it. Alright is the word of the day here. Vibe is cool, pizza is alright, but in all honesty, as a mid-30s person, I feel like I am raising the age average massively already. Moreno Pizza feels more like a place for the early 20s crowd. Cheap beer, a lot of space, affordable pizza. Nothing wrong with it, but there are nicer places in Gothenburg for pizza and drinks.

The Verdict

The largest pizzeria in the world! Whether that makes for good pizza or not is a different question, but Moreno Pizza is an alright experience. The architecture and vibe have a lovely 60s flair, paired with Italian-American details from the 1930s. As a vegan there is one pizza to choose from, a marinara with olives, tomatoes, artichokes and rucola at 155 SEK. Fair price, and the pizza is alright, but it is ‘just’ your Swedish style of pizza. Crispy dough, but decent sauce. Nothing too impressive, but does the job. As for the place itself: it clearly is intended for a younger crowd (early 20s). Cheap beer, affordable pizza and plenty of space. It’s loud, it’s busy and as a mid-30s person you feel out of place fast.

All in all an alright place, but there are plenty of better selections for pizza and drinks in Gothenburg. Moreno Pizza does work as a simple meet and snack place though, as you will usually get a place and they serve fast.
