Kiku Köket

4/5
What an odd location for a place like this.

When it comes to Sushi, most places adapted nowadays to have a vegan version on the menu. Still, you tend to have trouble finding something good. So, when Kiku Köket popped up right outside Nordstan (next to the parking), it wasn’t necessarily a good sign. But the colourful entrance and interior seem quite inviting. Let’s check it out!

Oddly located at one of the exits/entrances from Nordstan, Kiku Köket tries to make up for it by looking like a cute Japanese place. Once you go inside, you feel like you are in a whole different world, so kudos for that!

Tiny tables, a lot of decorations, and cute music. It really reminds me of some places in Japan. The menu ranges from your typical Sushi related dishes, to bowls, to some warm things such as dumplings or Bao Buns.

We went for Vegan Sushi and Bao Buns. And in all honesty, they are not in a rush to make your food. Despite the place being pretty empty and it was not the time for Foodora orders, it took them a good 30 minutes to bring the food. Acceptable enough, but just for your information.

They started with Bao Buns. They were served on a plate, filled with very crispy tofu, and topped with a sweet soy sauce. I am not a fan of this serving style, as you cannot eat them without completely messing up your hands. The tofu is alright, but too much of it and there is no composition. Not a fan.

The sushi came a bit later and arranged in a beautiful way. Some rolls filled with Oumph (not a fan), a bunch of tofu skin pieces for the protein kick, and plentiful avocado pieces.

All in all a decent combination and quite a high quality sushi. I am pleased, though I am not the biggest fan of the Oumph filled rolls. Some tofu would do much better in consistency and taste. But it is made to a high standard and served on a cute wooden plate.

So, atmosphere is cute, waiting time is long-ish, sushi is good. Not much to complain about, in fact. It definitely is one of the better sushi places for vegans, but I’d avoid the bao buns. I will gladly come back, especially since the price is very affordable for the location.

Price:

Sushi, 15pcs, vegan: 179 SEK

Crispy Vegan Rolls: 139 SEK

Bao Buns, 3pcs, vegan, 169 SEK

The Verdict

Kiku Köket is an odd bird right between Nordstans entrance and parking. It feels quite out of place, but the charming interior will instantly make you forget the surrounding buzz. It’s cute and like a little excursion to Japan. The menu has plenty vegan options, but at the end, I’d say stick to the sushi. The Bao Buns are really nothing to be proud of, but the Vegan Rolls will give you high quality sushi, a lot of protein and all of that to a fair price - just takes a while for your order to be ready. I’d come back and would say, if you need a break from Nordstan, go to Kiku Köket!
