I like bread. And a good type of sandwich has just that comforting and satisfying feeling that you sometimes need. One type of popular sandwich are Bagels with their chewy consistency, so it’s a pleasant sight to find a New York styles Bagel place right in Gothenburg. Jimmy & Joans at Teatergatan might give you that satisfying bite.
Teatergatan right next to Avenyn is becoming quite a popular street for good restaurants. It’s very central, but quiet, so the perfect location for good food. Jimmy & Joans have their bagels right here in a blue and charming locale.
The charming aura of the owner comes straight at you when entering. Immediately, you feel like you are in the US where service is done differently than in Sweden. People greet you and strike a conversation while you get accustomed to the surroundings. An odd experience for Scandinavians maybe, but it definitely helps making a fast sale.
As for the vegan options, there are two types of vegan cream cheese, one more standard and one with jalapeño, and then a bunch of vegetables to put on top. As well as a vegan type chicken spread.
We went for just a bagel with jalapeño cream cheese and all the veggies. Additionally we took some of the home made ice tea and lemonade.
You can choose your favourite type of bagel (sesame, plain, poppy seeds) and then after a short wait you will already have it served to you.
And they are indeed nice and give you that special kinda satisfaction that you only get from a bagel and its chewy consistency. The cream cheese was pretty neat as well and overall I liked the composition. The drinks were quite well balanced as well and not too sweet, though come at quite the high price point of 45 SEK per glass.
The charming atmosphere, the fast service and the decent bagels are quite a good overall experience. But, in the end it’s a bagel for quite the high price with just some vegetables. Good to come here every now and then though!

If you are looking for that New York style Bagel experience, Jimmy & Joan’s will give you just that. Pick your favourite bagel, choose your vegan cream cheese and toppings and indulge. The price point is still rather high for “just” a sandwich, but the atmosphere and nice service make up for it. Recommended to go here for that satisfying chewy crunch!
