Sushi me

Why is it so sweet?
— Pascal Kuta

If you are around Chalmers on the Johanneberg campus, you might want to go for lunch nearby. Since I started to work at the Science Park recently, I am exposed to a new world of lunch options. I am quite familiar with the student union restaurants and the ones around the Science Park, but for the time being, Sushi me, right on Gibraltargatan across the library was one of my first destinations. Let’s see how it holds up.

First of all, we need to adjust our expectations. Lunch places around the university have much lower standards as the ones around office complexes around the city. Whether it’s size, service or food. They are more like fast-food places to a cheap price to accommodate the target audience - poor students.

Now, with that out of the mind, Sushi me is a tiny locale that greets you with a screen on which the minimal menu is shown in a basic font. X amount of Sushi pieces for a specific price. That’s all you get.

After ordering, the friendly staff understands a vegan request without any issues and gets right on into preparing a set fresh for you. So far so good.

It’s ready after a short while, but in the meantime, you can help yourself to a little bowl of Miso soup. And oh boy, that Miso soup sure doesn’t deserve the name, as there is basically no Miso in it. It tastes more like a simple vegetable broth with too much oil. It even lacks nori, either inside or to add yourself. Hence, it’s just some warm oily water. Ouch.

The sushi is plated quite alright with a fair distribution of maki rolls and some tofu and avocado pieces, together with wakame, ginger and some European wasabi.

When indulging into the pieces however, they fall flat. The rice is average and somewhat dry, the maki rolls are formed and cut in an amateur way and the filling is iceberg salad (excuse me?), flat cucumber and tofu skin. Ouch again.

The tofu skin is hereby what really threw me off, as it is remarkably sweet. Almost as if it was stored in a syrup after frying. Really difficult to tell what is happening here, but it doesn’t work at all and ruins the entire composition. The avocado on the other hand was of a high quality. But all in all, the quality is among the low side of sushi and for that, the price is almost too high.

Price:

10 Pieces Plate: 100 SEK

The Verdict

Below average sushi to a price just on the border of what is acceptable for it. The friendly staff and unproblematic vegan options are a plus, but in the end, it’s a one-time go. If you are a student, really desperately craving for some Sushi, you might consider going to Sushi me. But otherwise, I’d say, avoid it and make Sushi at home instead. You will likely be better at it anyways after a few tries than Sushi me.
