Sayur

5/5
Goodness shouts. Evil whispers.
— Indonesian Proverb

Here’s the thing: I love Indonesia in many ways. I used to live nearby in Singapore, but the heartfulness of the Indonesians and their cuisine has always been a big favourite of mine. So, when Sayur opened in 2019, I was very happy to finally have a place with Indonesian food in Gothenburg. But does it hold up?

Sayur is a tiny place near Linné and close to Slottskogen. It’s not directly on the usual path, but still reasonably accesible. Inside, you will find a few tables and the counter to order. There are two dishes on the menu, Nasi Campur, a rice dish with a variety of things on side such as Tempeh and Tofu, and Gado-Gado, a sallad with peanut sauce and rice cakes. Both dishes are fully vegan.

After being greeted by potentially the nicest people in the world with the biggest smiles, you order and wait a little while for your food. There is no alcohol serving in this place, but there is a selection of local ‘folköl’ if you are up to that. The food usually comes quite fast and then you are free to indulge.

The Nasi Campur is a beautifully fragrant rice, topped with sauce and Tempeh and other protein-rich goodies on the side. Additionally, you will also find some very good Sambal if you like your food to be hot. The Tempeh is made by the staff and not bought in, and you can feel it in the structure. Definitely among the best Tempehs you can get. The tofu on the other hand is for my taste a little bit too uninspired and essentially just soaked in sauce. Baking it would be an extra touch of greatness I believe. Still, the composition is great overall.

Should you decide for the Gado-Gado, you have more freshness and crunchy bites from vegetables, but don’t underestimate this salad. The rich peanut sauce and high protein will fill you up good as well.

To top it all off, sometimes you can even follow Indonesian news on the TV. Might be a bit of an odd choice, but hey, it reminds me of Indonesia at least.

Overall, Sayur offers a fully vegan experience to a cheap price and very high quality. The only downsides lie in the place that can be crowded fast and the location paired with the opening hours, that is not the most convenient if you are not working or living in the area.

Price:

Nasi Campur: 115 SEK

Gado-Gado: 110 SEK

The Verdict

Sayur is a little escape to Indonesia. It is a small place that is oozing with good vibes and positive energy. Sometimes you can follow Indonesian TV as well, which is an odd choice, but charming in it’s own right. The prices are low, the quality is high. An absolute jewel in Gothenburg and much recommended!
