Kopps

2/5
Centrally located food options.

When you are in the centre of Gothenburg, you have plentiful food options, but if you have eaten at some of them you might know that it’s a huge gamble. Either they go all-in fancy and overcharge you massively for some cabbage in butter, or they are just overpriced and bad. And who can blame them? Rental prices are probably ridiculous, so it’s difficult to make a living. Kopps is located right across Domkyrkan, so not an easy place for good food. How does it hold up?

Kopps is a bit of an odd place, trying to have a bit more of an alternative charm in the midst of the replaceable places. There are jokes on the walls, the menu is openly vegan friendly and the prices are surprisingly low. How is all that possible?

Well, it’s not gonna be a surprise, but first things first. What is the menu? Basically your usual, let’s call it, “tourist” food. Pizza, Pasta and Burgers. Basically nothing offensive, people will be cool with it. Pizza is around 145 SEK, vegan option available (with vegan cheese!), burgers at 155 SEK with fries and some pasta in a similar range. On top of that there is a bunch of fika stuff, some of that also vegan. That’s promising, isn’t it?

It didn’t take them long to be ready with the food, that in best Swedish fashion is picked up with a vibrating puck by yourself. We went for pizza and burger.

And it’s a fairly big portion. The pizza has some vegetables and looks fairly competently assembled. The burger is your standard burger with a soy-based patty. And how is the taste?

Well, here we see how the prices come together. It’s rather obvious that they don’t have a pizza master in the back, but rather use a frozen crust and just assemble it on the spot. Similarly the burger experience is the same. It’s more of an assembling restaurant, rather than a place that makes much from scratch.

And that is fair in it’s own regard, I didn’t expect too much anyways. Plus, I am happy about having vegan options available, especially at that price range.

It brings us to the question though: why eat here then? Yeah, I don’t know either. Especially in a location like this, there are usually a lot of better places not too far away. But I am willing to cut them some slack, it’s affordable and more vegan options than you would usually see. As a student I’d probably loved this place. As an adult with a different experience and budget, I’d rather not eat here again.

Price:

Pizza: 145 SEK

Burger: 155 SEK

The Verdict

Kopps is a centrally located place that kind of caters to everyone. Pizza, burgers, pasta, fika. You don’t want to lose your potential customers at the base. Thankfully, they also have plenty of vegan options and all that at a low price. Too good to be true? Yeah, kinda. While prices are low and options plenty - even on the vegan scale, the food is just edible. Pizza is on frozen/premade crust (but with vegan cheese!), burger is basic, fries are oversalted. It’s alright for the price, and especially the location, but there are other places around the centre that will be likely a better options for the hungry vegan.
