Hermanos TacoKiosk

In Sweden it’s Taco Friday.
— Swedes

Sweden has quite the taco culture. Unfortunately, it has not much to do with tacos and is more of a Swedish non-offensive way of giving everyone the option to choose their own fillings in a burrito-kind of a way, so that no drama or questions might arise. Also, it’s happening on Fridays, which is weird. When it comes to proper Mexican tacos, the options are a bit more limited in Gothenburg, but Hermanos TacoKiosk in Majorna tries to have their own spin on it - every day of the week.

Located just a few minutes walk from Mariaplan, Hermanos Tacokiosk is centrally in Majorna. Surrounded by second-hand shops and other hipster-like establishments. The place itself is a container that reminds of a Diner somewhere in North America near a highway. It is cosy though, well decorated and they play a good selection of music that fits the Majorna-vibe.

The menu itself is showing limited options. It’s a taco place after all. So, you get Tacos, fries, or a burger. Whereas the latter only has a non-vegan/vegetarian option. Apart from that there are some sides and two desserts (non-vegan).

Obviously, I went for the only vegan option I had, the Tacos Frijoles. Refried black beans, roasted pablano chili, queso fresco (the vegan type), pico de gallo, salsa and some fried onions on top. To be honest, it’s a weird composition, but hey, I am all up for trying.

The food is served in paper plates only, even when dining in, and you are greeted with three massive tacos for 135 SEK. It’s a fair price!

However, when trying to eat a taco an issue arises: they are overfilled and not easy to eat with one hand, as is expected from Mexican tacos. Looking past this, the taste is the second issue that arises. Something just doesn’t feel right about this composition. The refried beans are rather tasteless, the pico de gallo is bland, the queso fresco pieces are too big and dominant, and the roasted onions on top remind more of a hotdog at IKEA. Don’t get me wrong, it’s alright, but somehow it doesn’t work at all.

Most off-putting is though the type of taco they used. It’s 100% corn, but it doesn’t feel like a Mexican corn tortilla, and more like a Swedish pancake. It lacks an interesting flavour-profile and feels bland in the end. Picture yourself making a pancake with just flour and water. That’s a little bit the sensation here.

It’s difficult for me to really get behind it, but it seems like the kitchen is not experienced in plant-based ingredients primarily. I am sure, with meat, the composition works out well, also with the type of taco, but as a vegan, I don’t like it. The place has a good vibe and the prices are good, but I would not eat here again, and rather have a drink only with friends who want to snack on a taco if they dare.

Price:

Tacos (3 pieces): 135 SEK

Non-Alcoholic Drinks: 25-42 SEK

The Verdict

Hermanos Tacokiosk is a charming place in Majorna that wants to bring a more authentic Mexican taco experience to Sweden. While the vibe works, the food disappoints by being bland and not well composed. It will fill you up for 135 SEK, but you will still feel empty inside. Go somewhere else for your (vegan) taco desires.
