Göteburgare Vegan

In case you need salt.

Burgers are an easy type of food at first glance. How hard can it be? Which is probably why Gothenburg is flooded with Burger places by now. At many of them more average than the other. Göteburgare Vegan is a special case, as they serve a vegan only menu. So a recipe for success, right?

With it’s location right at Andra Långgatan, it’s hard to miss Göteburgare Vegan. Right in a typical Gothenburg basement-floor, you will find a cosy and somewhat cramped locale. Order is done either via mobile menu right from the table or via the very charmingly created menu, looking like a newspaper filled with Gothenburg humour. Downside with the later: it’s outdated and difficult to read, so go for the mobile menu.

The options in the menu are, as expected, a bunch of different burgers. Main difference is the type of patty. From soy-mince, to Oumph, Tofu, black beans and mushrooms. All that is typically in a vegan patty can be found. They are also topped with vegan cheese and somewhat differently composed.

The menu comes with fries and dip for 145 SEK, drinks are on the cheaper scale as well. So all in all quite a well balanced meal. Well, apart from eating a burger with fries.

Once ordered, it arrives rather fast and you are ready to indulge. After the first bite, disappointment sets in though. It seems that no matter the type of patty you order, they are all deep-fried, or at least overfried. The two soy-mince patties that I had were so crunchy, I would earn dirty looks when snacking it in the library. Apart from crunch and the overwhelming taste deep-fried food gives you, I could not make up much of the rest of the composition. Caramelised onions? No clue. Sauce? I guess. It was just a crunch feast. The thing is: this is the second time I tried Göteburgare Vegan and the third type of burger I ate. And all of them seem to taste the same. Like overfried stuff in bread.

It doesn’t help that the fries are well made on the side, but also so oversalted, that you feel like you need a few more of them cheap drinks. All in all it’s quite the bust, unfortunately. As a concept I adore Göteburgare Vegan. And as a place to hangout and have a drink, it brings a good atmosphere. But the food is below average. Go to Max instead for a vegan burger.

The Verdict

It could have been so great. A fully vegan burger place, right at Andra Lång. Whatever you order, you know it’s vegan. But well, despite the much appreciated effort to go for such a concept, the food is just below average. Deep-fried, oversalted, mushy. You can get better vegan burgers at many places in Gothenburg, and I’d say, do that. But, for drinks and a fun atmosphere, Göteburgare Vegan does the job.
