Egg & Milk

3/5
What looks like half a pancake? The other half!

I’m not a breakfast person. Never have been, always struggled with it. But being married to my wife made me make breakfast many mornings, cause she really needs it. And I love to put my skills to use with waffles, pancakes and other sweet sweet things. But, when I don’t feel up to it, where do we go? Egg & Milk has probably the most non-vegan friendly name, but they do have some vegan options on the menu, so maybe this is the place to be?

Located at Övre Husargatan, near Slottskogen and Linné, Egg & Milk is quite the accessible location, but still kind of out of the picture and needs some more dedicated approach to visit. But if it’s the weekend and you want to take a stroll in the park after your breakfast, this is ideal.

Egg & Milk takes inspiration from American diners and does so quite well I’d say. It all looks a bit cheap, a bit used, but it’s alright and has it’s own charm. The menu has it’s own vegan selection, subtitled “no eggs, no milk, no problem”. I like it!

On the menu you can find overnight oats, bagels, salads, waffles, smoothies and pancakes. So pretty much your typical selection. No gluten free options since they handle wheat flour everywhere. I know the pain from my own food related business.

We went for blueberry pancakes. Three pieces come at a whopping 95 SEK, and we had fresh orange juice to flush it down at 59 SEK. Not the cheapest breakfast, considering the raw ingredient cost of one vegan pancake lies somewhere around 1 SEK. Unless they use golden wheat flour?

In any case, it was Saturday morning, so it took a while for the pancakes to be ready, but that’s alright. The pancakes come with frozen blueberries on top and some powdered sugar. On the tables you can find maple flavoured sugar syrup, but no real maple syrup. Bummer.

Tastewise? Well, it’s acceptable. My pancakes were a bit too tanned, slightly burned. Consistency is alright. But in the end, it’s pancakes that are pretty amateur in execution. But they are vegan!

And that brings me a bit to the point of it all. It’s great that there is a place for vegan breakfast options. But they are so poorly executed (at least the pancakes) while at a price tag that is almost outrageous for it, that it feels like a massive let down. I like the idea of going out for breakfast, but I can make three (six) pancakes faster than Egg & Milk and much better. And I am sure everyone else can as well, or learn it very fast. So what’s the point?

Price:

Bagel: 85 SEK

Salad: 119 SEK

Pancakes (3x): 95 SEK

Waffle: 75 SEK

Orange Juice: 59 SEK

The Verdict

Egg & Milk has despite it’s name quite some vegan options. Subtitled “no eggs, no milk, no problem”, you can find overnight oats, bagels, pancakes and waffles. Quite a nice selection! The execution, however, falls flat. Three pancakes with frozen blueberries come at a whopping 95 SEK, tend to take long to be ready and can come a bit overtanned/burned. On the tables you can only find cheap sugar syrup with maple flavour, no real maple syrup. And the American diner ambience, while charming, is a bit cheap and used up.

While I appreciate the vegan options on the menu, the price-setting, especially considering the quality feels almost outrageous. Making some vegan pancakes at home from scratch goes faster and is better than what Egg & Milk offers, and that kinda defeats the purpose of going there, doesn’t it? Still, I am happy there are vegan options.

I’d mainly give it a pass though.
