Crippas Café

3/5
Another fully vegan pub in Gothenburg!

When it comes to pubs, Gothenburg is usually not letting you down. There is quite a large scene of it, and mixed in with the alternative vibe, they are usually plenty vegan friendly. Crippas Café is another fully vegan one, at the edge of Majorna. Quite known in the scene, but for me personally a bit too far off for my usual visits.

It feels like you might go to take the ferry to Germany, but this is close to where Crippas Café is located. Actually quite easy to reach via tram at Chapmans torg, so not too far off. They know themselves it’s a bit off though, so there are clear signs near the tram stop anyways.

Greeted by alternative vibes, rainbow flags and a mixed crowd, Crippas Café gives you a good first impression if you are into those kind of vibes. As an old hardcore-dude, I am quite happy with the punk and leftish scenerey. But we are here for the food.

The menu is your usual pub menu. Some pizza, some burgers, some pasta. Nothing to blow you away, but everything is vegan, and that’s already a win as it gives you options to choose from. Pricing is on your typical pub level, call it 150-ish SEK per meal.

We went for a burger, the 414 one with caramelised onion, pickles, mustard and rucola, and the lasagne. In terms of alcohol free beer, there was only Carlsberg. Quite a disappointing for an alternative place like this, and feels rather old-fashioned.

Food was ready after only a short waiting time and it looked like, well, pub food. Both dishes were served with nacho chips from Santa Maria (the round ones), the burger with a homemade salsa and the lasagne with some side sallad.

Biting into the burger gave not much content. Mainly bread, but the second bite had it all. The soy-based patty, the mustard, the pickles, the onion, the rucola. And it was quite odd. The composition doesn’t work, but it’s okay. Reminds me of my student times.

The lasagne is pretty done as well, and perfectly edible, but nothing that makes me jump up, to say the least. And that’s more or less all there is to say. The food is okay, but nothing I’d eat again to be honest. It just has this vibe that a student cooked it for their friends, but not a place that actually sells it. But on the other hand, that’s what most pub food in Sweden is like, so no offense to Crippas Café here. I love that everything is vegan, but that doesn’t make the food something to look forward to I fear.

Nevertheless, the vibe is cool and if you drink alcohol it might be a good place all in all. As a non-alcoholic foodie, Crippas Café offers me awfully little.

Price:

Burger: 149 SEK

Lasagne: 119 SEK

Pizza: 155 SEK

The Verdict

Crippas Café is a cool place. The people have a good vibe, it’s very inclusive and fully vegan. But the food is…functional. Yes, it’s fully vegan and there are your basic pub classics such as pizza and burgers, as well as some extras such as lasagne. But, it’s really nothing you couldn’t cook better yourself at home in no time. Fairly, the price is alright for what you get, but I’d rather avoid eating here altogether. There are better places to have vegan food. Nevertheless, this is nothing against the place itself. It’s a pub at the end of the day and the kitchen is not a priority, and that’s okay. From a food-focused review, Crippas Café is nothing to be excited about though - even if it’s a vegan place.
