2112

And the meek shall inherit the earth.

Burgers are the vegans (?) best friend. Usually, they are fairly simple to veganise or find in a vegan interpretation somewhere. If in doubt, you will usually find a shady vegan burger somewhere if a restaurant has no other things. But what about an actual burger place? 2112 is a Gothenburg classic and if you like the music from the city, it will have popped up on your mind already. Let’s get into it.

Full disclaimer, I am going somewhat regularly to 2112 and one of my favourite parts about it, is that the menu keeps changing and the vegan/vegetarian burgers are renewed. Sometimes it’s more of a hit, sometimes more of a miss. But I am coming back and that already gives you an idea.

These days (Spring 2023) there are two vegan options on the menu, the soyfather and gordon grekko. The former a Italian type inspired burger with a soy patty, the latter a greek inspired one with a bean patty. I opted for the soyfather, my wife for gordon grekko at a price point of 215 SEK. They come with fries (also sweet potato) or corn if you like. I wanted both fries and corn. After a quick and fun chat with the waiting staff, the order was placed and arrived not that much later, despite the place being quite packed.

The vegan burgers come in a different bun than the other burgers, so as a vegan you will not get something like a brioche, but a rather dry kinda bun. Always a bit of a downer for me. But thankfully, the soy patty in the soyfather is a juicy and rich one, and the sauces on the burger help to moisturise the entire composition.

Personally, I feel though that the sundried tomatoes on the soyfather were a bit too prominent and dominated the burger. Meanwhile, my wife felt that the cold tzatziki on the gordon grekko was making the entire burger too cold as a whole. Hence, it lacked the comforting features of a burger.

The fries and corn were on point though and are always a welcome addition. Other than that, 2112 offers you a variety of beers and other drinks, so you will not end up thirsty. And lastly, the atmosphere is great if you like Gothenburg. This is a place that encapsulated the heart of Gothenburg and a great time.

Personally, however, I feel sometimes that the vegan options are lacking a bit. For once, the buns are a let down, especially as burger chains like Max or Bastard Burgers have better vegan buns. But also, the price point is quite high compared to other places and while still acceptable, it’s not always living up to it in the vegan burgers.

Price:

Burger with fries or corn: 215 SEK

Additional fries/corn: 69 SEK

The Verdict

I like 2112 a lot. It’s one of my favourite recommendations to non-locals. But even as a local I like to visit on a somewhat regular basis. However, it depends on the vegan burgers on the menu, so check before if the composition might appeal to you. And if not, just wait until the menu updates.
