14 m2 BAO

3/5
That bite of disappointment
— Pascal Kuta

Ever since Jinx started with their Bao Buns back in 2015 ish, they became more popular. How can one say no to steamy, yeasty wheat dough filled with spiced up goodies? With 14m2 BAO, a very descriptive name by the way, a new place opened up focusing on exactly that. Bao Buns on 14 square-metres. Right at Saluhallen. Let’s have a look!

At first, it is not located right IN Saluhallen at Kungstorget, but right AT Saluhallen. So, the entrance is from the outside and not the inside. Don’t run around Saluhallen like a confused Bao Bun Hunter please. The entrance is located on the Southern Side towards the square.

Inside it’s, as the name suggest, a tiny place with a rather effective kitchen. it’s serious business on a small scale, or so it looks like at least. The menu looks hipster, but has very little to offer. The vegan in you will spot the Crispy Tofu buns and get excited. Nothing too special here, it’s basically a copy of Jinx menu, but upon the request for vegan Bao Buns, the person behind the counter decided to answer with slight annoyance that “they can make it”.

Not too trust-inducing. But in any case, for 115 SEK, it’s worth a shot to get the mystery Bao Buns, I guess. Doesn’t take too long to receive the goods and then you find your food ready in a little paper box. And oh boy, that box is filled. The Bao Buns are thick!

With a little difficulty, you can get them out though, take a deep bite and…get disappointed. It basically tastes like nothing. The tofu is not that crispy or nice, mainly there is cabbage without any taste, and it’s lacking sauces or something that gives taste. It feels very bland, and with that, just very disappointing.

Don’t know what to say really. The base is there, but the execution feels like someone didn’t eat a well composed dish before. 115 SEK, it’s gonna fill you up, but leave you kind of empty. Average at best, and not the worst in town, but you might as well got o Jinx.

Price:

2x Tofu Bao Buns: 115 SEK

The Verdict

Bao Buns in a small space. 14m2 BAO is a clear description of the expectations. A tiny place that serves Bao Buns. Vegans will have the option to get crispy Tofu ones, but are greeted with annoyance from the chef when ordering vegan, so that’s not the best sign. The buns are thick and filled, but the taste is nowhere to be found. Tofu needs more time in the fryer, cabbage tastes watery and spices and sauces seem lacking. It will fill you up for 115 SEK, but leave you a bit empty and disappointed anyways. Not the worst Bao Buns in Gothenburg, but considering Jinx is a merely 2-5 minute walk away, you better go there instead.

14m2 BAO is average at best.
